HUNTING/FIELD TRAITS

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Flat-Coated Retrievers were the most popular retriever, and were widely used by gamekeepers on English estates. Although not as popular now, they still retain a dedicated following due to their excellent nose and abundant “bird sense”.

The Flat-Coat is an all-round hunting dog, working well on both upland game and waterfowl. They are often referred to as a gentleman’s hunting companion because of their versatility in the field while also being a beloved household pet.

Today Flat-Coats widely participate in organized working and hunt tests.  The dogs love it….but this also helps breeders test for, and maintain, the traits and purpose for which the breed was originally developed.
